In this session, we focused on the fashion advertisement and advertorial(advertise+editorial). Carlyn showed us some examples of ads that the images have nothing to do with fashion or clothing at all but they give the narrative and the story telling of the brand’s campaign, for example, it could be discussed about social issues.
For the task we asked to do during the class, I decided to use a picture of my mom and dad in their wedding ceremony. I love their wedding dress and suits so much and I felt that Chanel would goes well with this image. However, I also tried adding different brands and font types. Carlyn also reminded me to think about bringing something new and bringing my aesthetic to the brand. I strongly agree with her that I should consider more about this and make something fresh and creative, just like a manifesto. I’ll also try cropping the images to makes kind of a collection.
In this session we combined the works we did together in the indesign and export them as pdf (interactive) to be ready to published as an e-magazine. I used the website called issuu to create this online zine. I got some comment from my friends saying that they love the images, colors and how I edited them. Moreover, they said that the layout are quite nice and not too crowded. However, I think I can experiment more with the layout. I was a bit misconception as well because I supposed to put the interview content here but I just made them like an editorial or look book. Thus, I will try make a new e-magazine.
In this session we watched ‘the muse’ by Tim Walker. The narrative behind this film for me is about the mermaid tale, limerence, obsession, impossibility, sadness. I love the mysterious and dreamy feeling of the story telling. Moreover, the styling is amazing and they use a variety of brands and props. All the photos are gorgeous and I love the surrealistic vibes.
I love these set of photoshoot so much
The task we did in the class was to creating 4 pages of editorial using the photos we already have. I managed to made 4 pages but they are kind of not relating to each other because the mood & tone of the first 2 pages was quite different from another one. Moreover, the first 2 pages layout was not very creative, so me and Suzanne we both prefer the second 2 pages more. However, Carlyn suggested me to try an alternative font, so will definitely experiment with different type fonts.
I tried to work more with the outfit and product as what styling student should do.I made another pages using same mood & tone with the one above
In this session we were experimenting with a variety of layout styles and fonts for our zine content. My target audience is teenage, so the layout and font type should be fun, youthful and colorful. I was also considering about my research magazine/zine: Polyester, Buffalo, Dazed and Love.
I was not completely done with my interview content yet, so these were just a draft content. I used some of the pics I created from last session which I realized that most of them were the zoom in or half top portrait that can’t be seen much of clothes and product. Therefore, I have to focus more on styling which is my pathway direction. I need to take more photos of the full outfit, clothes, accessories and products! Carlyn told me that the font I used is ok and appropriate for this type of zine.
Carlyn suggested me to use the SELF background pattern on the right hand-side page to make it kind of connected to each other. Furthermore, she said this image is more suitable for the front cover and I’m agree with her because it has the SELF theme there and the plastic wrap as well.Carlyn told me that this is her favorite one, the colors and layout works very well as 2 pages. However, I think I can rearrange the text better in indesign because I could’t make it align to the edge in photoshop.
From the last interview session that we had to interview our friends about their attitude towards art and fashion, I was quite satisfied with the result because the questions were quite various and not too easy. However, I can do better on conducting an interview and create more flow of content by asking the questions that are related or connected to each other. Furthermore, if the content are too long or too many paragraphs there, I have to find the way to make them still look interesting and make people want to read them. Thus, I can try different layouts and add some illustration or mark-making.
I think I can prepare more appropriate questions this time, due to it’s mostly based on myself and for people who have the same interest and have been in the same situation as me.
Self Love is a romance of its own kind. Remember self love does not imply being selfish and just thinking about your own happiness. I believe it is an idea which revolves around acceptance of yourself as you are so that you can accept others as they are. It is a principle of loving your own being so that you are full of love and positivity. It is about coming to peace with your own self and letting go of your past wounds, it is about healing. Self Love is about becoming a butterfly from a caterpillar. It is about personal development, it is about an evolution. Self Love is about seeing yourself through your own eyes.
-Choice 2: Seasoning Zine
We all were born as like the raw ingredient that need to be mixed and cooked, just like our life that had been through thick and thin. All the challenges and mistakes are the spice of life. We all have our own unique property and taste that need to be seasoning the right way to enhance the best flavor of the recipe.
-Choice 3: Onion Zine
In fact, you’re a beautiful onion.
You’ve got a lot more going on underneath your skin than you can imagine. Whatever you think you know about yourself, there’s always another layer waiting for you to peel back and discover a new dimension. You just might not realize this yet.
Now doesn’t that sound like an onion?
Final decision
I decided to use Caterpillar as the name of my zine because the meaning behind it is the easiest one to understand and to explain. Moreover, I think it’s the most appropriate name to the concept of self-love, showing the development of the hairy and ugly caterpillar to chrysalis where u giving yourself a time to reflecting what your strength and weakness are, then try to change your weak point to be your strong point. After you can accept the negative part of yourself, you will shine up beautifully just like the butterfly.
The picture below was me doing a pose that was adapted from a butterfly hug which is an immediate stress-reducing technique that can also help decrease anxiety and lower your heart rate. I decided to not show my face on the cover because I want to convey the concept of not judging people by their facial.
Original photo
V1
I used the picture of me taken by my dad last year at the beach in my home country on a rainy day. Due to that, the sky was very dull and the sea was turbid as well. However I try to edited the bright sky into the photo using photoshop.
V2
V3
I tried to change the images adjustment, there is also the reflection of the sky on the sand and sea. They look actually better than the original one. However, I still wanted to add some more colors into it.
V4
V5
I tried to change the sky to sunrise time when the sky are kind of like cotton candy. Then I added more dimension into the photos by the reflection and little wave. I love version 4 the most so I decided to use this pic.
V6
V7
I tried different font type in the plain white color. I tend to like the right one more but I think I can do something more with that.
V8
V9
I tried to play with the adjustment: colors, curves, exposure, hue and saturation.
V10
V11
Playing with the texture. The right one give me the feeling of coral, crystal, pearl and sea.
V12
V13
I tried using several colors and reshape the font to be kinda like half top of the heart shape.
V14
V15
I added the barcode and plastic texture because the magazine usually comes with plastic wrap.
V16
V17
I added more colors into my original barcode and added some text into it as well.
I still like this image more and I think it goes very well with the plastic cover for the cover page. Thus, I tried changing the color of the text on the background and add the magazine title. However, I want to add some more text and barcode but still figuring out the way to make them not looking overcrowded.
I tried several text colors and add the title of the zine but it looks too busy at the moment. Therefore, I tried with different layouts and decided to use the one below as my final cover.
In this session we were reconsidering about what’s the different between editorial and fashion advertising; editorial can be multi brands and it is around the theme and concept, whereas advertising is only for one brand. I remember Seana Redmond who is usually working with underwear and like to play with the scale. Seana created many cool collage images and she also mixed the b&w with colors very well. I wanna try experiment with different techniques and combine them together to see how far can I it go.
In this session we had to created magazine cover by using the picture that we already have and try different techniques to make interesting illustration covers. I used the application on mobile phone like pics art and prequel then converted them to photoshop to add more editing. This is my first time using prequel, it has many cool filters and effects. Moreover, it is quick and easy because it has a magazine template where we can just pick the image we want for the cover. So I think this app is so helpful when we rush to complete our work but still want a good-looking outcome. Overall, I experimented with different techniques and apps. However, I can improve on adding more mark-making, for example, lines and dots.
The theme of this term’s project is ‘SELF‘. I’ve heard so many ‘self’ words: self-love, self-esteem, self-compassion, self-kindness, self-acceptance, self-respect, self-confidence, self-care and so on. When thinking about what concept I want to do, self-love is the first thing that came to mind.
There are so many words to describe how i feel about myself, how I think about myself and how I act toward myself. For me they all should coming together and supporting each other. I feel like to love myself, I have to increase my self understanding, enhance my self-acceptance, recognize my self-worth and take responsibility for myself. However, it’s not easy to have all of that in everyone, even myself, I still lack of self-confidence and still learning to accept my weakness points. It takes time to boost these positive view of myself.
My industry specialism focus is creative direction. Through my zine, I hope to further exploring and expressing my interest in Fashion styling and creative direction. As media student, I want to express the concept of ‘self love as an imperfect girl‘ making a story through images, using eye-catching layouts, unboring typography and illustration. As a women who used to be very unconfident and have that self-anxious from several factors, such as society or environment. Since I came to London, I feel like there’s more freedom of expression, everyone can do whatever they want and the culture is different here. Sometimes, thinking less and just try whatever I felt like I can’t do it because it’s too hard or too challenging, if I just do it, the result could be a lot better than I expected. I also want to talk about equality between genders through my zine. I feel like this is a good opportunity to tell others about my story, thus my role is to create an interesting and enjoyable zine. I will continue to use my digital skills and techniques I have gained from part 1 and 2 especially my photoshop skill to develop my work and make it more powerful and creative. I will continue document all my research and development on my blog.
I feel like this one is a bit minimal compared with my zine research, I could make it looks more colorful. Thus, I like the images of the true beauty and things that happen naturally that some people don’t like them. I could make this board looks more fashionable and more product focus as well.
